ADEP via The College of St. Scholastica Library CSS ID (Library Card)
Your CSS ID serves the function of a library card. If you do not have a CSS ID contact ADEP and request one. Before you can begin to take advantage of Library services, your card needs to be activated. This should occur automatically upon the issuance of the card. If for some reason your card is non-functioning, contact the CSS Library and your card can be activated manually. You will need to supply the Library with your name, status (i.e. undergraduate or graduate student), 14 digit barcode number from the back of your CSS ID, and your CSS student number (this is a CSS-generated number which starts with a B or V). This may be done either by the phone (218-723-6140) or by emailing the Library.

An active card allows you to check out books from the CSS Library, request books and articles via the MINITEX and ROVER services, and have free access to proprietary (pay-for-use) article databases available via the CSS Library.

PLEASE BE AWARE that your CSS ID is valid only for services & access to databases provided by the CSS Library. Your password will not give you access to databases available through other institutions.

Books
Searching for books in the CSS Library is done via PALS, the online card catalog. PALS is also a union catalog, or consortium of libraries, that pool and share resources. Through PALS, it is also possible to search individually the catalogs of the 125 member libraries, or to search all member libraries' catalogs  at one time.

If you access PALS from off-site of the Duluth campus, PALS will default to search "All Libraries" - meaning all 125 member libraries at one time. If you wish to search only for books in the CSS Library, you must select "College of St. Scholastica" from the list of libraries supplied.

Detailed instructions for searching PALS are available via the CSS Library Online Lab. For searching basics, use Worksheet One: Database Searching.  For searching for books by subject, use Worksheet Three: Finding Books through Subject Searching.

The University of Minnesota, the University of Minnesota - Duluth, and the majority of public libraries in Minnesota are not part of PALS. If you wish to search for books in these libraries, the catalogs must be searched individually. Follow this link for a selected list of non-PALS libraries in Minnesota.

If the CSS Library does not own a book you are interested in, a copy can be borrowed for you from another library through the MINITEX system (Interlibrary Loan). If you live more than 50 miles from the Duluth campus, you may request to have books mailed to your home address via the Rover service. Follow this link for detailed information about the ROVER service.

Articles (from journals, magazines, & newspapers)
Catalogs are used to locate books. Indexes are used to locate citations to journal, magazine, and newspaper articles. Indexes which are searchable via the computer are still referred to as indexes, but you will often see the term databases used.

Most databases index (list)  articles from approximately the mid 80's to the present. To locate  citations to older articles, it is necessary to use a print index. There are exceptions, such as PsycInfo, and as companies find ways to create profits by providing access to older articles, more will become available.

Database access from off-campus is available on the Library's Database Access page.

The CSS Periodicals List is available online. This is a list of the print subscriptions of journals and magazines available in the CSS Library. Access to journals and magazines not listed in the CSS Periodicals List may be available via selected databases.

Detailed information about the difference between journals and magazines, how journals disseminate research, how to recognize an article that is primary research, etc., is available via the CSS Library Online Lab. Choose Worksheet Four: Finding Journal Articles.

Copies of articles from journals and magazines not owned by the CSS Library can be requested from another library through the MINITEX system (Interlibrary Loan). If you live more than 50 miles from the Duluth campus, you may request to have articles mailed to your home address via the Rover service. Follow this link for detailed information about the ROVER service.

PLEASE BE AWARE that the full-text of all articles DOES NOT EXIST ON THE COMPUTER "SOMEWHERE." Some databases have no full-text. Some offer a majority of articles in full-text. The availability of full-text is dependent on the leasing agreement between the institution and the database supplier.

Theses & Final Applied Projects
Most CSS students who graduate with a masters degree submit a bound copy of their thesis/project to the CSS Library. Theses are cataloged as books and are available for check-out. If you are a graduate student just beginning your thesis, seeing what others have done can provide some insight as to where to begin.

These are searchable via PALS. Select "College of St. Scholastica" Library from the list of libraries provided. Conduct a "Subject Heading, Exact" search for "management thesis." This will provide a browsable list of over 200 management theses/projects, most of which can be sent to you via the ROVER service.

Citations
Properly citing information used in your papers is a fundamental aspect of scholarship. The College of St. Scholastica Guide to MLA & APA Format offers an online guide for citing the most common types of information used by students. This guide was created as part of The College of St. Scholastica's Library Lab.

The above guide is not a substitute for students purchasing either the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers or the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. Students in graduate programs are encouraged to purchase a style manual since they provide in-depth examples of various types of citations and details of proper formatting of papers.   CSS Library Homepage    Contact the Library     Hours    Staff    The Library's mission    Patron privacy    Policies    FAQs
