There is an old joke that asks
the difference between art and craft. The answer is that craft takes skill.
Artists sometimes cultivate the impression that "creativity" has no relation
to hard work and to technical skill. Why should one bother spending time
learning to draw when one is going to be an artist?
Today we live in a world of
hype about "information." With enough computing power and the boundaryless
Internet all things are possible and the creativity of every human on the
planet is just a phone connection away from being released. This vision
does not take into account that the majority of the world's information
still exists in print form, and that for information to be useful it must
be available [described and organized so that it can be found], that all
information is not equal in regards to authority, and that quality, organized
information is labor-intensive work.
The CSS Library Lab is designed
to help you think about the best source for the type of information you
are looking for, how to determine the quality of your sources, and have
the necessary skills to locate it. These information skills are the foundation
that allows for creative thought and will help you not only now, and in
your upper level classes, but also four or five years down the road when
you may no longer be reading about research, but conducting it yourself.
Throughout the lab, you will
be working on your paper for your ENG composition class. The lab will guide
you through different formats of information, and help you to be aware
of which formats of information are appropriate for different aspects of
your paper. Depending on your topic, certain formats may have more immediate
relevancy than others, but all formats will have their time and place as
you study and learn at CSS.
