Bring your CSS ID with you when applying.
-non-CSS students must apply for a special borrower’s
card at the CSS Circulation Desk..
Lending limitations apply to special borrowers.
Other local library collections
A library collection reflects the needs of its community of users. The CSS
Library collection is designed primarily to support the reading and research
needs of CSS undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty. It has
the most comprehensive nursing, physical therapy, and religious studies (particularly,
but not exclusively Catholic) collections in the Twin Ports.
University of Minnesota, Duluth
Collection emphasis on engineering and technology, medicine (not physical
therapy or nursing), the Northeastern Minnesota Historical Collection,
U.S. Air Force and aeronautics. A list of UMD periodicals is available
at the CSS Circulation Desk.
Duluth Public Library
Collection emphasis on local and North Shore history, consumer-oriented information,
popular fiction, U.S. government information. A list of DPL periodicals
is available at the CSS Circulation Desk.
University of Wisconsin,
Superior

ERIC documents. A list of UWS periodicals is available at the CSS Circulation

Photocopying
The Library has three photocopiers for patron use. The current cost is 10
cents per page. Limited change can be issued at the Circulation Desk.
-one of the second floor copiers features a beveled
glass edge which enhances the ability to copy from bound journals
-copiers will take dollar bills and change (no pennies).
A photocopy account can be set up with the Business Office, with your CSS
ID serving as a debit card. A Meal Account will not work.
If you plan on doing a large volume of copying, please
get change at the Business Office.
Printing from PALS, microfilm, or microfiche
In accordance with college-wide policy, the Library is now charging for printing

If you wish to print an article –
a) make a note as to the computer’s number
that you are working on (located on the top & back of the computer),
and the time & date
b) click on print. Your article will
be stored as a file in the Library’s Interlibrary Loan Office.
c) when you are ready to pick up your
article, ask for it by computer number at the Circulation Desk.
d) you must pay for the article at the
time it is printed. Printing fees are 5 cents per page - cash only. Printing
from PALS terminals cannot be charged to student's accounts.
Some ways to reduce your printing costs and/or avoid
immediate charges are –
a) make notes as to the articles you
would like to print. Then logon to a computer in any of the school’s
computer labs. Locate your article. Printing costs will now be charged
to your student account.
b) email the citations and/or articles
to yourself for future printing
c) make hand written notes

sure there are no extra pages you do not need.

an article for printing that is much more paper-friendly
The CSS Library has one reader/printer for microfilm &
microfiche. Copies are 10 cents per page and are paid for at the Circulation
Desk after the copying is completed. Cash is required. Copies cannot be charged
to student accounts. If you are unfamiliar with using the reader/printer
please ask for assistance at the Circulation Desk.
InterLibrary Loan
MINITEX (Minnesota InterLibrary Telecommunications Exchange) is a cooperative,
state-supported service among all libraries in Minnesota, North Dakota, and
South Dakota. Through MINITEX, the CSS Library can obtain copies of periodical
articles or borrow books, without charge, from any library in the state.
MINITEX forms for ordering books & periodical articles are found at the
Circulation Desk.
-white forms are for periodical articles.
-tan colored forms are for books.
-fill in all highlighted areas.
-make sure you sign the back of the card! Due to
copyright law, no request can be processed without a signature.
-after picking up your books or articles, remember
to ‘check them out’ at the Circulation Desk. You may keep the articles (but
not the books!). By checking them out, the Library’s computer file is cleared
and we know that you have received the information you requested.
-allow 7 -10 working days for your request to be
processed.
Copyright law & InterLibrary Loan
Making a copy of a periodical article is subject to federal copyright law.
Publishers of magazines and journals would prefer libraries to have subscriptions
rather than use ILL services such as MINITEX. The national library-publisher
copyright agreement allows the following copying free of royalty charges:
-a library may request copies of only five articles
from the same periodical that were published within the last five years.
-in this case, a library is the sum total of
all
its patrons. Therefore, if one individual requests five articles from a
particular periodical then no one else may request articles from that
periodical
for one year without paying copyright fees.
MINITEX places no restrictions on the number of items
one patron can request. However, the Library may use up its five ‘copyright
slots’ for a given year before you make your request. To make ILL work for
everyone, the Library asks:
-do not make frivolous requests for copies. Someone
else may need that periodical later.
-if CSS is over-copyright for a particular periodical,
the Library asks you to share the cost of the royalty fee. You will
be asked to pay $5 per article; the Library will pay the balance of the fee
(usually $15 to $20).
Unrestricted InterLibrary Loan borrowing
Books do not involve copyright issues. You may request as many as you like.
You will normally have two to four weeks to use a book before returning it.
Loan limits are set by the lending library. Government documents are not
copyrighted. They may be used and copied without limit, but must be returned
to the lending library. ERIC (educational) documents are supplied in the
form of microfiche. These need not be returned. Paper copies can be made
with the Library’s microfilm/microfiche reader-printer, at the cost of 10
cent per page.
